History

In 1908, after a number of families had purchased homes in this community the need for a church was dreamed of and resulted  in the organization of Mission Point Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Rev. M.F. Gordon, some boards were nailed to five persimmon trees to form seats near Armor and 46th street. It was here that the young people met for Sunday school. Their teacher was Rev. M.F. Gordon.

When the weather had  became to cold to hold service outside, the group moved into a three room schoolhouse that was located on the Orphan Home Academy site. This was owned by the Antioch District. At this location they started holding church services. All the families in the neighborhood, both Methodist and Baptist, worshiped together.
In 1909, Rev. William Jones, pastor of 9th Street Baptist Church and moderator of the Antioch District Church, officially organized the families into a church. Is was named Mission Point Baptist Church. Reverend  M.F. Gordon was called to pastor the church.

The members paid $5 for the first down payment on the site. The site was purchased for $100. The membership built a brush arbor and held services here for a while. In 1910 Mr. Will Cato, a white contractor, built the church structure. A church was formed, a bell was purchased, and installed in the tower. In July 1910 Mission Point Missionary Baptist Church was represented in the 37th Annual Session of the Antioch District Association. The association met at New Prospect Baptist Church in Russellville, AR. Mission Point had only thirty members. Brother W.M. Sweeden was the messenger. Rev. MF Gordon was the pastor. Rev. William Jones was the moderator. The church grew steadily and many departments became active; namely the choir, the missionary department, the sunday school department, and the Baptist Training Union.
